Hardwood lumber exports from the United States reached a 54-month high of 111
million board feet (MMBF) (261,000 cubic meters) in April, with volume 15%
higher than in April 2010. Notably, 90.4 MMBF (213,000 cubic meters) of
hardwood lumber was shipped from the U.S. to non-Canadian destinations in
April 2011, which is just 500,000 board feet (1,180 cubic meters) below the record
level of May 2004. Year-over-year shipments of U.S. Red Oak, White Oak, Poplar
(Tulipwood), Alder and Ash to China were up 109%, 126%, 37%, 23% and 98%,
respectively, through April. However, new Chinese orders for lumber have slowed
in recent weeks. April 2011 was a record month for U.S. hardwood log exports to
China. In fact, China recaptured the top spot from Canada as the largest foreign
market for hardwood logs. The value of hardwood log shipments to China is more
than three times that of Canada. April was also the second best month in history
for U.S. hardwood log exports to Vietnam, behind only May 2009.
